The Grumman F4F was the primary Marine Corps and Navy fighter during the first eighteen months of the Second World War. Its career started with being hit with three strikes, though in the end, it was put up against the heavy hitting Mitsubishi A6M Zero of Japan. Its first strike was with its original conception as a biplane. The second strike revolved around the idea that the US Navy felt uncomfortable with the thought of a high landing speed-enabled monoplane operating off its carriers. The third strike was about the F4Fs loss in a fighter competition against the Brewster F2A Buffalo. Despite getting three strikes, the F4F Wildcat was not pulled out of service. In the end, it had transformed itself from being an underdog to being a champion.
